Lightning struck this oak tree along Lakeshore Drive about 5 miles west from my normal shooting location.  Damage is impressive.  The damage starts in one of the trees main branches.  The bolt then spiraled down around to the trunk on the other side of the tree, and continued into the ground.  The bark was split all the way down.  The trunk is clearly burned as evident by the darkened area in the middle of the split for several feet above the ground (see the 4 pictures on the bottom row).  These pictures were taken July 15.  I wonder if the tree will survive, or if it will be cut down.
