While Camcorder 2 was shooting toward the NW and W (see Gallery V-20), I shot with Camcorder 1 at first toward UNO to the W as seen on the 3 rows above.  I shot in this direction for just 5 minutes starting at 5:35 pm.  Again, I could only estimate that these strikes were about 5 to 7 miles away, because there was no thunder to tell how far away they were. The incredible instability of the air near the ground bent the sound waves up so sharply that thunder could only be heard a short distance away from the strikes.

By 5:40 pm lightning was becoming more frequent to the left toward the SW, so I shifted to the new action.  This cell really shot out the lightning in spectacular style.  Many bolts struck too far the left, obstructed by the airport building, so I had to miss the peak direction of action.  Even so, there were plenty of beautiful bolts striking quite often.  I noticed a number of times when the bolts appeared as quick single bursts of light.  To the naked eye they only appeared as blurs rather than well defined bolts.  My only regret is that I should not have adjusted the exposure one step brighter just after I began shooting to the SW.  Some of the overexposed bolts above could have looked much better.  Still no thunder even though some bolts may have only been 4 to 5 miles away.  I continued shooting in this direction until 6:08 pm.  At that point the new cells were getting very active over Lake Pontchartrain to the N and NE.
