Nikki’s Story And My New Buddies New Orleans Thunderstorms and Other Weather |
One must wonder what kind of person would want to go out and spend so much time taking lightning pictures or video when there are the obvious risks and hassles that have to be dealt with each time. The one thing that seems to be common among the lightning lovers of the world is the basic love and fascination with Nature and one of Her most powerful efforts...the thunderstorm. Whether one grows up in the country or the city, the weather lures some to make it a career and many others to make it a hobby.
For all of my life since I was born April 5, 1941, I have been drawn to many of Nature's facets. Growing up outside Morristown, a small town in northwestern New Jersey, afforded me lots of time to learn, understand and love many things about nature. I made meteorology and oceanography a career. Thunderstorms have always intrigued me. "Terry, come inside, the storm's too close," or "Terry, get away from the window" are things I heard when I was little and it stormed. Most people can't wait to get inside when they hear thunder. Not me! I'm heading outside at the first boom or rumble. When I started using a camcorder for storms in 1994 my life long fascination stepped up to a passion. When I got a digital camcorder in 1997 my passion surged to an obsession. I majored in meteorology at The Pennsylvania State University beginning in 1959. After a B.S. degree and a few years in graduate school I came to New Orleans where I have been since December 1968. There are a lot more thunderstorms here than in New Jersey or Pennsylvania, thank goodness. My other interests include dogs (see link to Nikki's Story at the left), listening to many different types of music including jazz (especially the Dave Brubeck Quartet, George Shearing Quintet, and StanGetz), big bands (especially Artie Shaw, Benny Goodman, and Glenn Miller), latin (like Tito Peunte, Lucero and others), disco, some pop/rock (like Genesis, The Alan Parsons Project and others from the 80's), new age (like Enigma, Vangelis, Kitaro, and many others), and classical (Bach, Beethoven, Brahams, Tchaikovsky, Vivaldi, and others...symphonies, piano concertos, organ works). I love watching old movie classics (like Casablanca). And don't pull me away from watching my favorite sports, ice hockey and baseball, unless there is a thunderstorm moving in or brewing.
