Video capture stills starting in Gallery V-1 were made with a high quality SONY digital camcorder and are in jpeg format.  The still camera pictures starting with Gallery S-2 were taken with a Canon EOS Rebel 2000 35mm camera.  All were taken by me unless noted otherwise.

Most pictures are of lightning.  There are also pictures of waterspouts, clouds, flooding, and other things of interest (scroll down toward the bottom of this page for those links).  New pictures will be added regularly, especially during the thunderstorm months of the summer.  Enjoy!

Lightning

There are many lightning pictures.  It is impossible to come up with neat names for all of them.  So, I came up with a numerical system that gives the year, month, day of the month, and the picture number for the day.  If stored in a folder all together, they will sort in order by date.

Video still capture names; Gallery V-1 and later:  Example, the picture name 197053101.jpg is broken down as follows:  1 is a Y2K dummy number so the picture names will sort correctly in date order, even after 2000.  97 = year, 1997.  05 = 5th month, May.  31 = 31st day of the month.  01 = the first lightning picture of that day.

Starting in 2000 a -1 or -2 has been added at the end of each picture name to indicate that it was taken with one camcorder or the other.

In the "Best Images of" Galleries a number of the original gallery pictures have been removed to reduce site storage space.  However, the original image numbers have not been changed.  Thus, there are gaps in some of the image numbers.

35mm picture names; Gallery S-2 and later:  Example, the picture name 00022601.jpg is broken down as follows:  00 = year, 2000.  02 = 2nd month, February.  26 = 26th day of the month.  01 = the first lightning picture of that day.

Warning: The lightning in a number of pix struck very close.  It is not safe to be out in the open when lightning is striking close by.  I have a good vantage point inset on a second floor balcony of a building that is also heavily grounded.  Do not try to take pictures when a storm is too close unless you are very sure you are as well protected as I am, if not better.  Even with the protection I have, it is not 100% safe by any means.  I am at some risk, so, please, beware before you tempt fate.
