| This storm formed
one early evening in July 1981 about 6:30 pm. Walter Rivet, a very
good friend and neighbor in the apartment complex where I lived, came and
knocked on my door to tell me he wanted to try taking some lightning pictures
with his Canon AE-1 camera. We stood out in the courtyard and were
treated to a spell of beautiful lightning for just a few minutes.
The storm was to the west and blocked the sun which was still well above
the horizon. The reduced light allowed us to get time exposures of
20 to 30 seconds at f/12. The lab had to darken the photos to eliminate
the slight overexposure, and the results came out quite good.
We tried on a number of other occasions to shoot in other storms, but the lightning never cooperated. This one storm made all the other efforts worth it. |
