American Airlines is nearing a decision on a widebody order that could total as many as 65 aircraft, according to reports, as the carrier prepares to replace its aging Boeing 777-200ER fleet. The airline is evaluating proposals from both Airbus and Boeing.
American Chief Commercial Officer Nat Pieper told Airliner World that the competition between Airbus and Boeing could go either way, describing the process as being in its endgame. The reported figure of up to 65 aircraft could include options or purchase rights, and no firm announcement has been made.
American's immediate replacement requirement is its fleet of 47 Boeing 777-200ERs, which have an average age of about 25.8 years. A potential Airbus order would return the manufacturer's jets to American's long-haul fleet after a six-year absence, following the retirement of its last A330 aircraft in 2020.
The most frequently discussed Airbus candidates are the A330-900neo and the A350-900, though the decision could still favor Boeing or be split between the two manufacturers.
