US transportation officials and aviation industry groups are asking Congress for an additional $30 billion to complete the modernization of the nation's air traffic control system and aviation infrastructure.
Senator Eric Schmitt, a Missouri Republican, introduced the Modern Skies Act on Monday to authorize the funding. The plan includes efforts to implement a common automation platform and cloud computing infrastructure for air traffic control.
The proposal is backed by the Modern Skies Coalition, which includes Airlines for America, the Air Line Pilots Association, the National Air Traffic Controllers Association and the Association of Value Airlines.
Congress previously approved $12.5 billion for air traffic control modernization last year through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford joined the coalition in urging lawmakers to approve the additional funding.
