At least 81 U.S. military aircraft and drones have been lost or damaged since the war against Iran began earlier this year, according to an updated Congressional Research Service report prepared for members of Congress.
The report, updated on 5 October 2026, tallies crewed airplanes, helicopters, and unmanned aircraft lost or damaged during operations against Iran. It draws on military statements, news reports, and findings from the Defense Department's inspector general.
The reported losses include some of America's most advanced warplanes, including an F-35A Lightning II stealth fighter and 12 F-15E Strike Eagle fighters, at an estimated replacement cost of up to $3.3 billion.
