Huntsville International Airport (HSV) has marked the beginning of phase one of its West Aviation development.

The project is backed by a $2 million federal appropriation secured by U.S. Rep. Dale Strong, who represents Alabama's 5th Congressional District.

Planned work includes a new runway, additional hangar space, and a direct-access taxiway ramp to the west of West Runway 18R/36L.

Airport leaders say the expansion positions HSV to recruit aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul companies and serve defense, aerospace and advanced manufacturing sectors.
