An aircraft equipped with Joby Aviation's autonomy technology flew more than 3,100 miles across the United States without a human pilot taking control at any point, the company said on Friday.

Joby described the cross-country trip as the first fully autonomous flight across the United States. The operation included autonomous taxiing, takeoffs, navigation, and landings, using a converted Cessna Caravan.

A pilot was on board for compliance, but the aircraft performed the entire operation autonomously, remotely supervised from Joby's headquarters in California and Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina.

The company said the aircraft will return to the West Coast over the next two weeks with stops including Louisville, Kentucky, and Salt Lake City.
