Joby Aviation announced it has completed what the company describes as the first fully autonomous flight across the United States, flying an aircraft from California to North Carolina.

The cross-country flight was reported to cover roughly 3,100 miles. Joby, which is developing electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for commercial air taxi service, said the milestone demonstrates the maturity of its autonomous flight systems.

The demonstration comes as the company continues working toward launching commercial air taxi operations.
